In November 2004, Anthem, Inc. and WellPoint Health Networks merged to create the nation's largest health benefits company, WellPoint Inc. After the merger, the new WellPoint Inc. continued to be successful in attracting new members by offering innovative new products, but the challenge arose to quickly and easily deliver communications for these offerings.
The Challenges
Minimize IT Involvement
Key to fueling growth at the newly-formed WellPoint Inc. was promoting new offerings and informing members — communications which had traditionally relied on IT involvement to manipulate the print stream. However, with the convergence of the health companies into a single entity, WellPoint Inc.'s IT department had their hands full with systems integration projects, not to mention essential HIPAA compliance efforts. WellPoint Inc. needed an efficient, speedy solution to manipulate their print files without having to rely on IT.
Convert Disparate Documents
The merger also presented a printing challenge: How to efficiently convert and reformat documents — including EOBs — from the various offices across the country into AFP format suitable for WellPoint Inc.'s national print and mail facility.

Amid the technological and production challenges, WellPoint Inc. wanted to ensure that responsiveness to users — both internal and external — was not adversely affected. Even more, WellPoint Inc. aimed to further improve responsiveness.

For WellPoint Inc., StreamWeaver® was used for document consolidation, page splitting, document sorting, address validation, personalization and more.
The Benefits
Faster Turnaround for Internal & External Communications
StreamWeaver® allowed WellPoint Inc. to manipulate print files without having to touch the core application and without getting IT involved. With this print stream manipulation, WellPoint Inc. is now able to turn around their business users' requests in hours or days instead of weeks.
StreamWeaver® has also allowed WellPoint Inc. to send timely, targeted mailings to members. For example, upon the birth of a new child, WellPoint Inc. uses StreamWeaver® to send new mothers pertinent information about well-baby clinics, surveys and more.
Printing Efficiencies
WellPoint Inc. uses StreamWeaver® to reformat documents to meet the new WellPoint Inc. production standards in place at the print and mail facility: Moving checks from the top of the page to the bottom of the page, adjusting the address block, and adding 3of9 barcodes and OMR marks to control finishing equipment.
WellPoint Inc. also utilizes StreamWeaver® for document consolidation, which has helped the company realize significant print savings. In one project, for example, WellPoint Inc. merged three print files — the broker commission check, vouchers and the pending commission statement — into a single print stream. Now a single print project replaces what had previously been three separate printings and mailings.
Maximized Postal Discounts
StreamWeaver® helps WellPoint Inc. further maximize savings and postal discounts by reducing "Undeliverable as Addressed" mail. StreamWeaver® calls the address correction solution, which validates member addresses and adds the delivery point barcode to the member address block.
